Am I not valued as a current customer?

Am I looking at this right?  "valued AT&T iPhone customer" and $499 to upgrade to the new 32GB

This isn't real, right? What am I missing, because this just ain't right.

Yes, I was just arguing with an Apple fan boy about this. He thinks it will be $299, but it appear to be $399.

Must have to do with where you are in your current contract. I think I am 14 months into a 2 yr and it listed the price for me at $299 for a 3GS.

Yes, my 2nd Gen, 3G contract is currently at 11months. So apparently I get screwed for upgrading EVERY year and being a loyal customer and NEVER complaining.

That all changes now.

It is exactly right. AT&T will give a discount on new equipment when you (1) sign up as a new customer; or (2) become eligible for contract renewal. Actually, they allow a discounted equip upgrade within 3 months of the end of your contract. Otherwise, you pay their 'no commitment' price - I thought the 3Gs 32GB was $699 no commit. However, they also require a NEW 2 year contract - effectively extending your current contract to 2 years from the date you purchase the iPhone.

Also, their ETF is either a flat $175 or $240 pro rated ($10/month for 24 months), depending on the terms in effect when you joined up. They also check for CHURN within 6 months of your cancellation and rather than create a new account (along with new customer pricing), they reactivate your old account... so don't plan to pay the ETF and sign up as a new customer - they will catch you and not allow it.

And with Apple releasing a new iPhone every 12 months, existing iPhone customers either pay through the nose to get the new one, or have to do without.

dwfaust - i remember something like this last year, when I upgraded to from the 1st gen, but I didn't have to pay the full price. I think I made my purchase a little over a year after purchasing the 1st gen.

But this says, I'd have to wait till 2/01/2010, to pay the
